The Pokémon Company has released a free update for Pokémon Legends: Z-A, allowing players to obtain Mewtwo and its Mega Stones through the Mystery Gift feature. This addition unlocks a new side quest after completing the main story. The update arrives ahead of the Mega Dimension DLC launch on December 10, 2025.
Update Details
Players can now claim two free Mega Stones—Mewtwonite X and Mewtwonite Y—via the Mystery Gift function in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. To download them, open the menu by pressing X, select Link Play, choose Mystery Gift, and select Get via Internet. After saving the game, these stones enable Mewtwo to Mega Evolve into Mega Mewtwo X or Mega Mewtwo Y.
Mewtwo is not available in the base game but can be caught through a new side quest called "Project M." After finishing the main story and claiming the gift, players should travel to Lysandre Cafe to start the mission, which involves exploring Lysandre Labs to encounter the legendary Psychic-type Pokémon. This marks the second legendary added via Mystery Gift, following Diancie, which requires the free Diancite stone and a similar post-story quest.
Context and Upcoming Content
The update enhances the game's roster ahead of the Mega Dimension DLC, set for release on December 10, 2025, at a cost of $30. The expansion introduces new Mega Evolutions, including Mega Lucario Z—the first Z Mega Evolution with a shorter cooldown but faster Mega Power depletion. It also features forms for Raichu (X and Y), Baxcalibur, Chimecho, and Zeraora, plus a roguelike mode that exceeds the level 100 cap in an alternate dimension called Hyperspace Lumiose.
As of December 2, 2025, the base game includes most Mega Evolution-capable Pokémon, with a few legendaries and starters still missing. This free addition brings players closer to a complete collection without needing the DLC.
