Senator Iván Cepeda announced a strategy of peaceful civil disobedience if president-elect Abelardo De la Espriella does not address several conditions. Leaders from the incoming government and other sectors immediately rejected the initiative.
Interior minister-designate Rodrigo Lara Restrepo said Cepeda must adhere to the Constitution and the law. “The Colombian people have spoken, they spoke at the polls, president-elect De la Espriella won the elections”, he said.
Vice president-elect José Manuel Restrepo insisted that the election result must be respected. Representative Daniel Briceño described the call as an extortion mechanism aimed at opposing with violence.
Former presidential candidate Enrique Peñalosa called Cepeda’s arguments ridiculous. Representative Cristian Garcés questioned Cepeda’s demands regarding a possible extradition of President Gustavo Petro and warned that the opposition will not be constructive.
