Red Dead Redemption 2 reaches 79 million units sold

Take-Two Interactive has confirmed that Red Dead Redemption 2 has sold over 79 million copies, securing its position as the fourth best-selling game of all time. This milestone pushes Mario Kart 8 Deluxe to fifth place in the rankings. The achievement highlights the game's enduring popularity seven years after its initial release.

Sales Milestone

In its latest earnings report, Take-Two Interactive announced that Red Dead Redemption 2 has now sold more than 79 million units worldwide. This figure marks a significant update from previous reports and establishes the 2018 open-world Western as the fourth highest-selling video game in history, according to both Kotaku and GameSpot coverage. The game's success is attributed to its detailed storytelling and immersive gameplay, despite its lengthy playtime and deliberate pacing.

Take-Two noted that Red Dead Redemption 2 remains the top-selling title in the U.S. over the last seven years based on dollar sales. Frequent discounts, such as sales at $20, have likely contributed to its accessibility and ongoing revenue, unlike competitors like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which rarely drops below full price.

Context and Rumors

The sales confirmation comes amid speculation about future ports. Reliable leaker Nate the Hate reported earlier in 2025 that versions for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S are in development, potentially launching before the end of the year. These would include upgrades like improved graphics and performance, building on backwards compatibility already available for current-gen consoles.

Take-Two has not officially commented on the ports but revealed in its earnings briefing that eight new iterations of existing titles are planned through March 2028. This includes confirmed releases like Civilization 7 for Switch 2 and WWE 2K25 for Switch 2, leaving room for Red Dead Redemption 2 among the unannounced projects. CEO Strauss Zelnick emphasized the company's approach to ports, stating, 'We improve the technology, we upgrade the visuals, and we make performance enhancements. And that's why I think our remastered titles typically do so well.'

No release dates, trailers, or preorders are available yet for the rumored ports, and all details remain unconfirmed by Rockstar or Take-Two.
