Four lion cubs showing signs of mange have been spotted by visitors at Addo Elephant National Park in recent weeks. SANParks veterinarian Dr David Zimmerman says the organisation will monitor rather than treat the animals.
The cubs appear to have sarcoptic mange, a skin condition caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei. Dr Zimmerman noted that the animals remain in good body condition despite the visible symptoms.
SANParks policy treats naturally occurring diseases as part of normal ecological processes. Intervention is limited to cases involving human-introduced diseases, endangered species at risk, or threats beyond park boundaries.
Rangers and veterinary teams will continue to observe the cubs' behaviour and health. The approach aims to preserve natural immunity development in wildlife populations.
Hot and humid conditions at the park may have contributed to the current flare-up, according to the veterinarian.
