Sisters arrested over mother's death from neglect

Two sisters in San Diego have been arrested and charged in connection with the death of their 81-year-old mother. The women are accused of first-degree murder and elder abuse after their mother was found dead in a couch.

Ingrid Wu, 51, and Rebecca Wu, 53, were arrested last week. They stand accused of first-degree murder in the death of their mother, Kun-Ying Yang, and elder abuse involving their 88-year-old father. The incident occurred in early March. Officers responded to a 911 call around midnight on March 6 at the family's residence on Genesee Avenue in the University City neighborhood. They found Yang deceased and positioned face-first in the gap of a pullout couch. Police said Yang had likely been in that position for at least 15 hours. The medical examiner ruled the cause of death as positional asphyxia with neglect as a contributing factor. A court declaration alleges the sisters waited more than 18 hours to call for help after finding their mother in distress. Ingrid Wu was arraigned on Monday and released under conditions including GPS monitoring. Rebecca Wu is slated to be arraigned on Tuesday and remains in custody at the Las Colinas Detention Facility.
