Spain eliminates Germany to reach Davis Cup final against Italy

Spain's tennis team has advanced to the Davis Cup final after defeating Germany in the semifinals. Pablo Carreño and the doubles pair of Marcel Granollers and Pedro Martínez were key to the victory. They will face Italy on Sunday for the title.

In the Davis Cup semifinals held in Bologna, Spain overcame Germany thanks to two decisive wins. Pablo Carreño, ranked 89th in the ATP, defeated Jan-Lennard Struff 6-4 and 7-6(6), in a match where he came back from tough spots, including a tie-break that was 6-1 against him. "We don't have the best team, with Carlos [Alcaraz] the level would be much higher, but we know what we are. We all have a career behind us, we've done great things, we're not just starting," Carreño said after his win. "It was almost miraculous," he added about the outcome.

Earlier, Jaume Munar lost to Alexander Zverev 7-6(2) and 7-6(5), in an even match where Munar secured breaks but faltered in the tie-breaks. "I didn't play my best tennis, I didn't take my chances, especially in the tie-breaks. It showed why I'm not better than Zverev. The match was even because except for Carlos and Jannik [Sinner] we're all very level," Munar commented.

The doubles was the highlight: 39-year-old Marcel Granollers and Pedro Martínez beat Tim Puetz and Kevin Krawietz 6-2, 3-6, and 6-3. The Spanish pair showed early focus, withstood the German comeback, and clinched the third set, even saving a break point at 5-3. This victory takes Spain to their 11th historic final, without their number one Carlos Alcaraz, underscoring the collective effort of a team lacking dominant top-100 stars. On Sunday, starting at 3:00 p.m. on Movistar, they will face Italy for the Silver Salad Bowl.
