National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula has announced government plans to build a memorial monument at Chetambe in Webuye East to honor those killed resisting colonial rule. The 20-acre site will serve as a cultural and historical tourism hub. The announcement came during the Tachoni cultural festival on December 26, 2025.
During the Tachoni cultural festival in Webuye, Bungoma County, on December 26, 2025, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula announced government plans for a memorial monument at Chetambe Fort, where many locals were killed resisting British colonial rule. The 20-acre site will include a building complex with offices for community leaders and serve as a cultural and historical tourism attraction to generate revenue for the county.
"The government promised to build a monument in Chetambe to honour our heroes. The promise has not faded. We will look for land of about 20 acres, and we call upon investors to come and build the monument," Wetangula stated.
The monument will preserve Tachoni heritage and promote Luhya community unity. Wetangula was installed as a Tachoni spokesperson during the event. Leaders, including Webuye East MP Martin Pepela, urged the county government to increase funding for cultural activities.
Plans for the monument date back to the 1980s but were not pursued. In 2016, the government pledged to revive the project following requests from local leaders. Chetambe Fort is a historic site of anticolonial resistance and is currently on private land.
