Thunderstorms and heavy rain led to two deaths and multiple emergency responses across Germany on Sunday.
An aquaplaning crash on federal road 35 near Bruchsal caused a head-on collision. A 65-year-old driver lost control and hit an oncoming car carrying a 55-year-old man and a 54-year-old woman. Both died, while the 65-year-old was seriously injured.
Lightning struck the Pauluskirche in Osnabrück during a baptism ceremony. No one was hurt, though some guests noticed a brief smell of burning. Another strike hit a house in Melle and started a fire.
Around 200 emergency workers responded in the Soest district of North Rhine-Westphalia. The rail line between Unna and Soest stayed closed until Monday morning. The German Weather Service lifted all thunderstorm warnings by evening.
