Swedish players leave French hockey club Grenoble

Grenoble announced that Swedish forwards Martin Karlsson and Fredric Weigel, along with defenseman Pontus Englund, will depart after this season in the French league. The club thanked them on its website for their contributions. All three players faced injuries toward the end of the campaign.

The French club Grenoble confirmed the departures following a season that saw the team reach the playoffs. Martin Karlsson, a 35-year-old veteran from Leksand, joined in September and recorded 13 points with five goals and eight assists in 37 regular-season games. He suffered an upper-body injury just before the postseason, ending his time on the ice there on a challenging note. Grenoble expressed appreciation for his efforts during his stint abroad. Fredric Weigel, 34, played a full regular-season schedule of 44 games, notching 21 points including eight goals and 13 assists. The center, who helped promote Djurgården to the SHL last year, appeared in every league match but sustained an injury in the fifth semifinal game against Angers, which concluded his season. Pontus Englund, a defenseman raised in Timrå, rounds out the Swedish exits. He moved from Sundsvall in Hockeyettan in 2023 to pursue opportunities abroad, including stints in Denmark, Poland, and now France with Grenoble.
