President Donald Trump endorsed Republican Representative John James for Michigan governor on Monday. The move comes in a crowded GOP primary ahead of the August 4 vote.
Trump posted the endorsement on Truth Social, praising James as a West Point graduate, combat pilot, Iraq War veteran, and current congressman. He said James has the courage and wisdom to deliver results for Michigan.
James responded by thanking Trump, whom he called the greatest president of his lifetime. He criticized Democrats including Jocelyn Benson and Gretchen Whitmer for policies on crime, voting, and education.
State Senate Minority Leader Aric Nesbitt suspended his own campaign and backed James after the announcement. Businessman Perry Johnson remained in the race and questioned the endorsement, calling James a two-time statewide loser.
Democratic candidates include Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson. Michigan has not elected a Republican governor since 2014.
