Nigeria's Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo and MRS Holdings founder Alhaji Sayyu Idris Dantata have been named Vanguard Personalities of the Year at the 2025 awards ceremony in Lagos. The event at Eko Hotels and Suites honoured leaders from politics, business and other sectors. Several governors and lifetime achievers also received recognition.
The 2025 Vanguard Personality of the Year Awards took place on Friday at Eko Hotels and Suites in Lagos, bringing together Nigeria's influential figures from politics, business, entertainment and humanitarian sectors. Organised by Vanguard Media Limited, the annual event recognises contributions to national development.
Top honours went to Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo for public service reforms and Alhaji Sayyu Idris Dantata for stabilising fuel supply through MRS Holdings. Governors Uba Sani of Kaduna, Nasir Idris of Kebbi, Mai Mala Buni of Yobe, Bassey Otu of Cross River, Agbu Kefas of Taraba, and Dauda Lawal of Zamfara were also celebrated for leadership.
Music icon 2Baba captivated the audience with a medley of his classic hits. Tunji-Ojo dedicated his award to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stating, "This award is not just for our performance, but also for Mr President’s leadership, encouragement, and the platform he has provided for us to innovate."
Lifetime achievement awardees included former Anambra Governor Jim Nwobodo, Zenith Bank founder Jim Ovia, Bishop Matthew Kukah, Vincent Maduka, Bruce Onobrakpeya and Kofoworola Bucknor-Akerele. Nwobodo remarked, "You get awarded when you are in power. Now, out of power, you will be remembered." Bucknor-Akerele called for stronger democracy ahead of 2027, noting financial barriers limit women's political participation.
Event chairman Henry Ajumogobia and Vanguard Editor Eze Anaba emphasised integrity and hard work as keys to Nigeria's progress amid challenges.
