Uda to conduct grassroots elections in 20 counties in January 2026

The United Democratic Alliance party has scheduled grassroots elections for its remaining 20 counties on January 10, 2026. Aspirants must register via the party's portal by December 23, 2025. This follows the party's recent success in by-elections.

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA), Kenya's ruling party, announced plans to hold grassroots elections in 20 counties where such polls are pending. The decision came from a joint meeting of the party's National Executive Committee and National Election Board, chaired by Deputy Party Leader Kithure Kindiki.

National Election Board Chairman Anthony Mwaura stated that the elections will occur on Saturday, January 10, 2026. The affected counties include Baringo, Bomet, Elgeyo Marakwet, Kericho, Nakuru, Nandi, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Samburu, Embu, Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Laikipia, Meru, Murang'a, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Tharaka Nithi, Kakamega, and Vihiga.

Aspirants seeking party positions are urged to register through the UDA portal from December 4 to December 23, 2025. Mwaura noted, "The official notice for purposes of the Grassroots Elections will be issued by the National Elections Board on December 4, 2025." Following registration, candidates will campaign until the election date.

This announcement follows UDA's win of 12 seats in by-elections held on November 27, 2025, across 22 electoral areas to fill vacancies in parliamentary, senatorial, and county assembly positions. UDA Secretary General Senator Hassan Omar commented, "The United Democratic Alliance party’s victory in 12 seats during the just-concluded by-elections is a clear indication that President William Ruto remains popular among Kenyans." The by-elections highlighted the party's ongoing influence amid preparations for internal polls.
