Zhipu AI launched its GLM-5.2 large language model and ZCode platform on June 16. The release positions the Chinese firm closer to leading American AI systems in coding and cybersecurity tasks.
Co-founder Tang Jie responded to comments by Elon Musk about Chinese AI progress. Less than two weeks later, the company unveiled GLM-5.2, described as its most advanced model to date.
The open-weight model has shown strong results in independent tests. It outperformed Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.8 on some software engineering tasks and matched capabilities in bug detection.
Zhipu AI also released ZCode, an AI coding assistant. Head of global operations Zixuan Li stated that competition and collaboration advance the field for all participants.
Researchers note the model still trails U.S. systems on certain general reasoning tasks. U.S. export controls on advanced chips continue to limit Chinese companies.
