President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on January 7 that Alejandro Gertz Manero, former attorney general, will serve as Mexico's new ambassador to the United Kingdom following his early resignation from the Attorney General's Office. On January 7, 2026, during her morning press conference, President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed the appointment of Alejandro Gertz Manero as Mexico's ambassador to the United Kingdom. "I can say it now because it has already been approved, it has the agrément: He is going to Great Britain, to England. The Senate has to approve it, then we'll give the date," the president stated. Gertz Manero, who stepped down from the Attorney General's Office (FGR) two years before his term ended, will be succeeded by Ernestina Godoy, former Mexico City prosecutor.
In his resignation letter to the Senate, Gertz Manero wrote: "This proposal will allow me the possibility of continuing to serve my country, in a new task that honors me and for which I am grateful." Sheinbaum described how the offer arose during a private meeting, as recognition of his career, and that he accepted with interest in a diplomatic role.
Gertz Manero will replace Josefa González at the embassy. Mexico-UK relations feature notable trade exchanges. From January to December 2024, Mexico's main exports were automobiles and passenger transport vehicles, originating from San Luis Potosí, Querétaro, and Mexico City. Imports from the UK also focused on automobiles, destined for Mexico City, Nuevo León, and Jalisco.
In October 2025, exports reached 270 million dollars and imports 234 million. UK foreign direct investment in Mexico totaled 823 million dollars in 2024. Additionally, in the third quarter of 2025, Mexico received 1.62 million dollars in remittances. Regarding migration, in 2020, 2,582 British migrants were recorded in Mexico, concentrated in Mexico City, Querétaro, and Nuevo León.
This diplomatic shift could enhance cooperation in economic and cultural areas between the two nations.
