Mexican businessman Alfredo Achar Tussie, founder and CEO of Pinturas Comex, has died at 85, as confirmed this Friday by Enlace Judío. Born in Mexico City in March 1941, Achar was a key figure in corporate social responsibility and philanthropy.
Enlace Judío confirmed this Friday the death of Alfredo Achar Tussie at 85 years old. The businessman, born in Mexico City in March 1941, joined Comex in 1961 and was named chairman of the board in 1988.
Under his leadership as corporate CEO and executive chairman, Comex became a leader in the paints market. The company, founded in 1943 by the Achar family as a small hardware store, was acquired in 2014 by PPG Industries in a $2.3 billion deal, led by Marcos Achar.
Achar excelled in philanthropy as founder and president of Fundación Activa, Fondo Nacional de Becas, Fundación ProEmpleo Productivo, and the Privado Provivah trust. He also served as counselor at Valorum, Banco Nacional de México, and Banca Mifel, and as a member of the CNDH Advisory Council until resigning in 2015 for health reasons.
He was a founding member of Papalote Museo del Niño and spoke at World Bank and Inter-American Development Bank forums. In May 2023, Universidad Anáhuac México awarded him an Honoris Causa recognition.
