Former WWE Champion Big E has expressed hesitation about assuming a more regular on-air role with WWE, citing the demanding travel schedule as a major deterrent. In a recent interview, he highlighted his appreciation for life outside the intense 'hamster wheel' of weekly road shows following his 2022 neck injury. Big E officially retired from in-ring competition in February 2026.
Big E, who suffered a severe neck injury in 2022 that broke his C1 vertebra, announced his official retirement from professional wrestling in February 2026. Since stepping away from the ring, he has appeared as an analyst for WWE's Premium Live Events, providing commentary on pre-shows and post-shows.
In an interview with The Takedown on SI, Big E discussed the prospect of a more consistent role on WWE television. He stated, “It’s possible, I think it would have to depend. I will say I think the idea of being on the road every single week for an extended period of time is something that I’m not really open to doing right now.” He acknowledged support from within the company, noting, “I’ve been approached multiple times by people within the company... Michael Cole has been someone who has definitely been in my corner, and I’m very thankful for all the lovely things he’s said about me.”
Reflecting on his early career, Big E recalled, “When I first started on the road, we would do five shows a week every single week... I was happy to do it... being young, being 26 when I first got called up, I wanted to be on every show.” However, after experiencing life off the road, he emphasized its benefits: “Once you’re able to get off that hamster wheel... I have my weekends back again... when I first started dating Kristen, my fiancée, I was able to come out for a chunk of 10 days for two weeks. And, man, life is good out here. Life is good off the grind.”
Big E's retirement decision stemmed from his neck not healing properly, with no new bone forming, and medical advice against returning to the ring. He also cited the sobering sight of older wrestlers dealing with past injuries as a factor. Despite his reluctance for full-time travel, he remains grateful for his current involvement with WWE.
