Bruce Springsteen receives award and apologizes to Bono

Bruce Springsteen was honored with the Harry Belafonte Voices for Social Justice Award on June 13 at the Tribeca Festival in Lower Manhattan. The event featured a conversation with Bono and a performance with Patti Smith.

The ceremony took place on the final day of the Tribeca Festival. Springsteen dedicated the award to residents of Minneapolis, Portland and Los Angeles for opposing federal actions in their cities this year.

During a sit-down talk with Bono, Springsteen apologized for declining to license his 2007 song “Girls in Their Summer Clothes” for a Gap commercial tied to the (PRODUCT)RED campaign. “I should have f–king done it. I have to apologize,” he said.

Patti Smith performed “Peaceable Kingdom” and “People Have the Power” at the BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center. Springsteen provided acoustic guitar backing and joined Bono for backup vocals on the second song. He closed the evening with a solo rendition of “Land of Hope and Dreams.”
