Chinese semiconductor scientist Wang Danhao dies in US

Wang Danhao, a 31-year-old postdoctoral researcher at the University of Michigan, has died. His family and fiancée are awaiting a police report on events leading to his death.

Wang worked in Zetian Mi’s lab at the University of Michigan since 2022. He developed advanced semiconductor materials for more efficient electronics and next-generation light-based technologies. His research appeared on the university website in 2024 and 2025.

He had secured a faculty position at his alma mater, the University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei. Wang planned to finish his US research and return to China in May.

His remains are now with his mother, his only immediate family member. Both his mother and his fiancée, whom he planned to marry this summer in China, have suffered severe emotional distress, according to a Michigan-based legal source familiar with the case.
