The Curator’s Choice exhibition at Art on Target presents works by 10 artists selected from the local community. It reflects the range of voices and skills in Nelson Mandela Bay’s visual arts scene. Now in its third year, the show includes both emerging and established creators.
Art on Target director Bretten-Anne Moolman said the artists were chosen because each has a distinct voice and clear mission visible in their work. The group spans ages from the 20s to an octogenarian and includes varied backgrounds in race, gender, training and experience.
Some participants are showing their work publicly for the first time while others have exhibited at local and national levels. Moolman noted that selection offers them a new step in their artistic development.
The exhibition features techniques from painting and ceramics to cyanotype printing, mixed media and 3D printing. Educator Estelle Marais described the display as diverse and unpretentious, with works that combine youthful energy and mature insight.
A new feature this year allows viewers to watch short videos of the artists in their studios on the Art on Target Facebook page. The related Same Size-Same Price-No Signature exhibition is scheduled for July.
