DA to release P25M more in fuel subsidies for farmers

The Department of Agriculture will distribute an extra P25 million in fuel aid to at least 5,000 farmers.

The Department of Agriculture plans to release the additional funds on top of an earlier P150 million allocation and a larger P10-billion assistance program. Department spokesman Arnel de Mesa said on June 3 that the Department of Budget and Management had issued a P25-million special allotment release order. Distribution can begin once cash is released. De Mesa stressed the urgency, noting that farmers are currently preparing land and establishing crops, a period when machinery use is high. He added that the initial P150 million is insufficient and that the department had sought a further P30 billion to address rising costs linked to developments in the Middle East. Senate hearings on related requests have been interrupted by recent leadership changes and other events.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has approved a service contracting program for public utility vehicles, a P10-per-liter fuel subsidy starting April 15, and the release of P8 billion in assistance for over 42,000 barangays nationwide to cushion impacts from the Middle East crisis such as higher fuel prices, a weaker peso, and threats to livelihoods, Malacañang said Thursday. PUV drivers will receive additional income of P40 to P100 per kilometer, while commuters get at least 20% fare discounts on routes linked to trains and major bus lines.

The Department of Agriculture (DA) is rolling out a P5,000 subsidy to 9,570 farmers relying on mechanized equipment to cushion surging fuel prices. The P50-million sub-allotment was released after global oil prices surpassed $80 per barrel amid Middle East tensions.

The Department of Agriculture has begun rolling out P10-billion cash assistance for about 4.17 million registered agricultural workers under the Presidential Assistance for Farmers and Fisherfolk Program. Farmers and fisherfolk nationwide are each expected to receive P2,325 amid rising production costs due to the ongoing US-Israel war on Iran. Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. described it as a lifeline for those hit by soaring petroleum prices.

Energy Secretary Sharon Garin warned of a possible fuel price increase starting April 20, following a rollback announced by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. effective April 14. She attributed this to uncertainties involving US President Donald Trump and Middle East conflicts. Garin shared this during a Senate PROTECT committee hearing on April 13.

The Department of Agriculture has formed a food security task force to monitor and address disruptions in agricultural supply, prices, and trade due to energy emergencies and geopolitical tensions. DA Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. said it replaces the department's previous ad hoc monitoring system.

The government began a pilot rollout of a P10-per-liter fuel subsidy for public utility jeepney drivers in Metro Manila on April 14, with 52 accredited gas stations participating. Energy Secretary Sharon Garin said the three-month program will test the system before expanding to other public utility vehicles.
