A Directorate of Criminal Investigations officer was stabbed three times during an attack in Langoni on Lamu Island and remains hospitalized.
The incident occurred at 4 a.m. last Friday when the officer and his colleague, both in civilian clothes, were accosted by a man. The officer was stabbed in the stomach, neck and sides before the attacker fled.
Witnesses Abdi Osman and Simon Kadenge said the fight lasted about four minutes and that a crowd gathered afterward. The second officer ran when the suspect drew the knife.
Lamu County Police Commander Shadrack Ruto condemned the attacks and cited two prior cases of officers injured in the past two months. Activists including Hussein Khalid of Vocal Africa and Mathias Shipeta of Haki Africa called for action.
