The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has launched a search for one of seven students suspected in the Utumishi Girls Senior Secondary School fire that killed 16 students.
The fire broke out on Thursday, May 28, 2026, in a dormitory at the school in Gilgil, Nakuru County. All 16 students died from severe burns, according to autopsy results released by the DCI on Sunday.
The DCI confirmed that one of seven suspects identified through CCTV footage was released to her parents and is now missing. Efforts are underway to trace and arrest her.
The other six arrested students have been confirmed via the footage. The school was closed indefinitely and its board dissolved. President William Ruto and other leaders ordered an immediate investigation.
