Thirteen people were killed and 15 injured in a mass shooting at Jumpers informal settlement in Cleveland, Johannesburg, on 9 June 2026. A 43-year-old woman from Lesotho died from her injuries this week. No arrests have been made.
The shooting occurred last week at the informal settlement. Victims included Melusi Mthembu, 40, Hillary Ndoro, 32, Jone Paulo Mussadaro, 25, Joao Jeremia Manuel, 21, Matsinhe Matsimbe, Matilda Matsimbe, and Anele Mayeza. Several families are from Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and South Africa.
Relatives described the sudden losses and ongoing trauma. Sifiso Mzwandile Mthembu said his family had not felt safe since the incident. Patience Garande learned of her brother’s death while searching for children.
The South African Police Service confirmed no arrests. Community leader Angela Mopai said counselling sessions are expected to begin at Cleveland Police Station from 10am on Wednesday. Families are seeking assistance to transport bodies home.
