In a significant act of philanthropy, Rt. Hon. Friday Osanebi, the former Deputy Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, announced a ₦1 billion donation to aid Christmas celebrations for residents facing economic challenges. The gesture was revealed on Friday in Asaba, where Comrade Mathias Ogochukwu Osanebi, the lawmaker's younger brother, spoke to journalists about the initiative's purpose.
Mathias Osanebi explained that the donation seeks to “restore joy, hope and comfort” to families affected by the downturn. He portrayed his brother as “a compassionate leader whose generosity is rooted in love for the people, and not political ambition.” The distribution, which has already begun, includes trailer-loads of rice, cows, goats, groundnut oil, tinned tomatoes, cash gifts, and other essentials to enable families to celebrate “with dignity.”
This effort continues Osanebi's annual tradition of providing car gifts to youths, widows, community influencers, and supporters. To ensure transparency, a “credible and responsible team” has been formed to oversee fair and accountable distribution. Mathias emphasized the broader context, stating, “At a time when Nigerians are facing severe challenges, my brother believes an act of kindness, no matter the size, can restore happiness.”
The donation is seen as timely relief against rising prices of food, energy, and transportation, bringing joy to thousands of households across Delta State. Many view it as a humanitarian response to the struggles of struggling families.
