Dyson unveils PencilWash slim wet floor cleaner

Dyson has announced the PencilWash, a lightweight wet floor cleaner that extends the slim design of its PencilVac vacuum. Priced at $349, the device combines mopping and debris removal without needing a filter. Early tests show it effectively cleans hard surfaces with ease.

Dyson introduced the PencilWash as the world's slimmest wet floor cleaner, building on the pencil-thin design of last year's PencilVac. The device weighs 4.9 pounds and features a 1.5-inch-thick handle that houses the motor and battery, allowing it to maneuver under furniture and into tight corners. Its battery provides around 30 minutes of runtime, with a screen displaying the remaining level and a dock for charging.

The PencilWash uses a Submarine cleaner head with a mop roller, fresh water tank, cleaning solution, and dirty water tank. It employs hydration, agitation, and extraction to clean hard floors, rather than suction like traditional wet-dry vacuums. The high-density microfiber roller, with 64,000 filaments per square centimeter, removes both wet and dry debris in one pass. Dyson states that it always applies fresh water, ensuring quick drying and no trapped dirt or odors, as no filter is required.

In a demonstration at Dyson's Soho store, a tester cleaned a marker-drawn CNET logo from a wood floor without residue. The device felt lightweight and easy to use, similar to the PencilVac but more versatile for quick cleanups than the bulkier WashG1. At $349, it is cheaper than the $600 PencilVac and the $770 WashG1, positioning it as an alternative to tools like Swiffer for hard surfaces.

A release date has not been announced.
