Egypt, Japan seek to expand industrial cooperation, investment

Egypt’s Minister of Industry Khaled Hashem met with Japan’s Ambassador to Egypt Iwai Fumio to review current Japanese investments and explore expansion opportunities. The meeting, attended by Assistant Minister for International Cooperation Ahmed Maghawry, underscored bilateral ties elevated to a strategic partnership in 2023. Egypt’s Minister of Industry Khaled Hashem hosted Japan’s Ambassador to Egypt Iwai Fumio to review Japanese investments and identify new opportunities across the Egyptian market. Hashem highlighted the automotive, pharmaceutical, and electronics sectors as priorities for collaboration, noting Egypt’s goal to increase vehicle production to 100,000 units annually by 2030 while building local supply chains and feeder industries.

He stated that Japanese firms, particularly Nissan, are positioned to benefit from Egypt’s national automotive development program, its strategic location, and trade agreements accessing African and Middle Eastern markets. The minister also expressed interest in Japan’s expertise for technology localization, citing Egypt’s skilled workforce and improving investment climate.

Ambassador Iwai reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to deeper economic engagement. He noted current investments focus on automotive manufacturing and components, home appliances, renewable energy, water treatment equipment, and green industries.

Iwai added that several Japanese companies are exploring opportunities in Egypt, with the embassy supporting business-to-business ties and further collaboration.
