Engineering student dies by suicide in Greater Noida hostel after rebuke for arriving drunk

A 20-year-old second-year BTech student died by suicide at a private hostel in Greater Noida on Friday night after arriving drunk with friends and clashing with the warden. The management recorded a video of his behavior and sent it to his father, who scolded him over the phone. Students allege he was assaulted with PVC pipes before he jumped to his death.

The incident occurred at a private hostel in Knowledge Park-3, Greater Noida, where the 20-year-old student from Bhoginpur in Jhansi arrived in an inebriated state around 9pm on Friday with two friends. The warden argued with him over his disrespectful tone, recorded a video of the episode, and sent it to his father. The father, upon receiving the clip, reprimanded the student over the phone and warned that his admission would be canceled, forcing him to return home.

According to fellow residents, the student was taken to the hostel office and beaten with PVC pipes. The hostel's owner reportedly employed bouncers who also assaulted him. Parth Singh, a hostel resident who helped rush the victim to the hospital, said, “He was taken to the hostel office, where he was beaten with PVC pipes. The hostel owner has bouncers, and they also assaulted him.” Another resident, Rahul, added, “I didn’t know him very well, but I heard that the warden beat him. This has happened earlier as well.”

Police refrained from commenting on the assault claims. After an alleged hour-long beating, the student returned to his room and jumped to his death. He was taken to a nearby hospital around 11:30pm, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Following a complaint from the family, the warden and hostel owner were booked for thrashing the student. The event triggered a clash between residents and management, escalating to damage of hostel property, including a bus, as seen in social media videos. Singh alleged that protesting students faced a police lathi-charge, but an anonymous officer denied it: “No, there was no such lathi-charge; however, we needed to clear the students as they were destroying property.”

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Greater Noida) Sudhir Kumar stated, “In the presence of family members, inquest proceedings were conducted.” Police took custody of the body and detained two individuals for questioning.
