A fierce structural fire broke out on Sunday morning in Caldera, Atacama Region, leaving one man dead and around 15 people displaced. The blaze started in a home at the intersection of Batallones de Atacama and Paipote streets, severely damaging three houses and affecting nearby structures. Prosecutors have launched an investigation to establish the causes of the incident.
The fire took place in the Caldera commune, Atacama Region, during the morning of Sunday, November 2, 2025. According to preliminary information, the flames began in a home at the intersection of Batallones de Atacama and Paipote streets, spreading quickly and completely destroying three houses. Nearby structures sustained significant damage, resulting in the death of an adult man and displacing about 15 people.
Substitute prosecutor Marcela Vargas arrived at the scene with police and emergency personnel to coordinate initial proceedings. "According to the background of this incident, the emergency affected three homes that were destroyed, while others also suffered considerable damage, causing the death of an adult man whose possible identity is known but will be confirmed through scientific examinations," the prosecutor detailed.
The Caldera Local Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation to clarify the causes and circumstances of the blaze. Vargas ordered the involvement of detectives from the Homicide Brigade (BH) of the Investigations Police (PDI) to conduct examinations at the site and gather evidence to determine the fire's origin and the conditions of the death. Additionally, Firefighters will provide a technical report with hypotheses on how the fire started, while the Medical Legal Service (SML) recovered the victim's body and will perform the corresponding autopsy.
