Police in Samburu County are hunting for five remandees who escaped from Wamba Police Station on November 5, 2025. The inmates overpowered a duty officer following a staged commotion in their cell. Authorities have deployed a multi-agency team to recapture them.
On the evening of Wednesday, November 5, 2025, a dramatic jailbreak occurred at Wamba Police Station in Samburu County. According to a police report released the following day, the incident unfolded around 8:40 pm when one of the five remandees in a shared cell shouted that a fellow inmate had collapsed.
The officer on duty at the report office rushed to investigate and opened the cell door. The prisoners then pushed the door forcefully from inside, knocking the officer to the ground. They overpowered him and fled in different directions. The injured officer sustained soft tissue injuries to the right side of his hand, head, and knee.
A second officer, who was returning his firearm to the armoury, heard the commotion and fired two rounds from his AK-47 rifle in an attempt to halt the escape. Despite this, the suspects managed to get away.
The escapees were awaiting trial on charges including illegal possession of ammunition and robbery with violence. "We have deployed a multi-agency team to pursue the escapees. We urge members of the public to provide any information that may assist in their arrest," the police report stated.
This incident is part of a pattern of recent jailbreaks in Kenya. For instance, in August 2024, 13 suspects, including alleged serial killers, escaped from Gigiri Police Station in Nairobi. Five officers were subsequently arraigned in court and released on bond pending investigations into their potential involvement.
Police continue their search in Samburu, emphasizing community cooperation to ensure the suspects are apprehended swiftly.
