Brian Wilks and Sara Wilks have agreed to a deferred prosecution deal that could end child neglect charges stemming from an incident at Miramar Beach.
The Texas couple left their 6-month-old in a tent on the Florida beach while they walked with their other children. Witnesses called 911 after spotting the unattended infant, and deputies later arrested the parents.
Under the agreement, the Wilkses must complete 25 hours of community service, attend a parenting class and avoid any arrests for one year. Prosecutors will drop the child neglect charges if they meet the conditions.
The Walton County Sheriff's Office said both parents admitted placing the child under the tent for a nap before losing track of time. The Department of Children and Families took temporary custody of the children until relatives arrived.
A press release from the sheriff's office described the event as a reminder that brief inattention can lead to serious outcomes.
