Generalitat corrects error on drownings at Oliva beach

The Generalitat Valenciana erroneously reported four drownings at Aigua Morta beach in Oliva on Saturday. Guardia Civil, the mayor, and firefighters clarified there were no deaths and only a minor was treated. Health sources apologized for the error.

The Centro de Información y Coordinación de Urgencias (CICU) of the Generalitat reported on Sunday that four people, two minors aged 11 and 14, had drowned late Saturday at Aigua Morta beach in Oliva (Valencia). The initial message stated an alert came in around 10:05 Saturday and a SAMU unit confirmed the deaths.

However, Guardia Civil, Oliva's mayor, and the Bomberos Consortium corrected the information. They said teams responded Saturday to assist several people, with firefighters pulling four from the water and a fifth in serious condition transferred to a medical center. There were no fatalities, these sources stated.

Oliva's Protección Civil received an alert just before 7 p.m. about a family with two minors struggling in the water, but upon arrival they had exited on their own. Firefighters confirmed all affected individuals were out of the water, apparently aided by another beachgoer.

Generalitat health sources apologized for the erroneous information given to media and requested it be withdrawn. In the WhatsApp group for press, the initial message was deleted with: “Sorry for the inconvenience. There seems to have been an error and we are checking this information”.
