Jason Momoa exits Helldivers Sony film project

Jason Momoa is departing the Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions film adaptation of the Helldivers video game franchise. The project, directed by Justin Lin, remains in development with Sony now seeking a replacement lead actor.

Sources close to the production confirmed Momoa's exit from the role. The reason for his departure has not been disclosed. The film is based on the cooperative shooter series from Arrowhead Game Studios, which began in 2015. Its sequel sold more than 12 million units on PS5 and PC shortly after its 2024 release. Hutch Parker is producing alongside Asad Qizilbash of PlayStation Productions and Lin through Perfect Storm Entertainment. The movie is expected to reach theaters on November 10, 2027. Details about the plot remain under wraps as casting continues.

Sony Pictures has signed filmmakers Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, directors of 2025's Final Destination: Bloodlines, to a first-look deal that includes them helming the long-in-development Metal Gear Solid movie adaptation. The duo's new company, Wonderlab, will develop the project along with others for Sony labels, as first reported by The Hollywood Reporter on April 9, 2026.

Microsoft held its March Xbox Partner Preview on March 26, revealing console launches for Hades 2 and several other titles alongside new details for upcoming games. Highlights included a release date for Supergiant Games' Hades 2 on Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 next month, plus fresh looks at Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio's Stranger Than Heaven. Many announced games will join Xbox Game Pass.
