The International Documentary Association has added four new members to its board, announced on March 11, 2026. The newcomers are Jonathan Gray, an attorney and producer with over 30 years in the documentary field; Susan Margolin, an award-winning producer and pioneer in digital distribution; Jennifer Tiexiera, a filmmaker and co-founder of Lady & Bird; and Katie Townsend, a litigator and former deputy executive director of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press.

This brings the total number of board members to 17, including president Ina Fichman, secretary Chris Albert, and treasurer Maria Agui-Carter, among others from seven countries. Fichman commented, “Jennifer, Jonathan, Katie, and Susan bring deep knowledge and a shared commitment to advocacy for documentary filmmakers. With eleven new members in the last eighteen months, spanning seven countries, our board represents more areas of expertise and experience than it has in years — better positioning us to represent the full breadth of the community we serve.”

Executive director Dominic Asmall Willsdon stated, “The documentary community is navigating real pressures right now — on creative freedom, on the ability to reach audiences, and the safety of filmmakers doing dangerous work. The experience and commitment of this board make IDA better equipped to defend the needs of the field.”

The IDA, based in Los Angeles, supports nonfiction filmmakers through grants, fiscal sponsorship, events, the Documentary magazine, annual awards, and the Getting Real conference. It also advocates for documentary artists via statements and collaborations.

Background on the new members includes Gray's productions like Anxiety Club (2024) and Afghan Dreamers (2022); Margolin's work with New Video/Docurama Films and HBO’s A Tree of Life; Tiexiera's films such as Speak! (2025) and Subject (2022); and Townsend's role at Gibson Dunn focusing on media and First Amendment law.
