TV Globo announced on Tuesday (April 7) that Luís Roberto, its principal sports narrator since Galvão Bueno's departure after the 2022 World Cup, will not cover the 2026 World Cup transmissions in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
The diagnosis came during routine exams, revealing a neoplasia in the cervical region. The network stated the treatment will prevent the narrator from upcoming broadcasts and World Cup games, starting June 11. No replacement has been named yet.
Luís Roberto, 64, with Globo since 1998, thanked the support: “In nearly 40 years at Globo, I learned this house never abandons its own. I am fully supported by our entire team.” He added: “Being absent during this period including the World Cup is a huge challenge, but the biggest is to overcome this stage. That is my focus. With faith in God and science, we will soon return to normal life. Thank you all for the affection and support.”
Prior to the leave, he narrated Brazil's friendlies against France and Croatia at the end of March, plus Flamengo vs. Santos last Sunday (April 5).
