Mexico defeated South Africa 2-0 in the opening match of the 2026 World Cup at Estadio Azteca. Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez scored the goals for the home side.
The match began with a goal by Julián Quiñones in the 8th minute of the first half. Raúl Jiménez extended the lead in the 21st minute of the second half.
Three expulsions defined the game. Sphephelo Sithole was sent off in the 4th minute of the second half, Themba Zwane in the 38th minute and César Montes in the 46th minute.
Mexico held 60 percent possession and took 16 shots on goal, while South Africa managed only three attempts. Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio officiated the match.
The result puts Mexico at the top of Group A after the first matchday.
