Mexico seeks to lower US tariffs in T-MEC review

Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard said Mexico prioritizes reducing automotive, steel and aluminum tariffs during the T-MEC review with the United States.

Ebrard noted that 85 percent of Mexican exports enter the United States without paying tariffs thanks to the agreement’s rules of origin. The official rejected the US proposal to apply seasonality to agricultural trade.

Mexico awaits an August resolution on a Section 301 investigation related to excess productive capacity. The next round of bilateral negotiations is scheduled for the first week of September.

Ebrard said changes to rules of origin could extend until 2027 and that the United States seeks to add economic security topics. Mexican exports grew more than 24 percent and the trade surplus exceeded 9.8 billion dollars.
