Murena and Volla partner on de-Googled Android tablet

Murena, a French company specializing in privacy-focused smartphones, has collaborated with German manufacturer Volla to release the Murena Volla Tablet. The device features a MediaTek Helio G99 processor, 12GB of RAM, and runs on the de-Googled /e/OS based on Android 14. Priced at €698 excluding shipping, it targets users seeking data privacy without Google services.

Murena has offered de-Googled Android smartphones loaded with /e/OS since 2022, removing Google services to prevent user data profiteering. Volla, founded in 2017 by Dr. Jörg Wurzer, produces repairable, privacy-oriented hardware preloaded with Volla OS and Ubuntu Touch.

The new Murena Volla Tablet merges Volla's hardware expertise with Murena's software. It includes a MediaTek Helio G99 SoC, 12GB RAM, and 512GB storage expandable to 1TB via microSD. Other specifications comprise an ARM Mali-G57 MC2 GPU, a 12.6-inch 240 ppi QHD display, a 13MP rear camera, a 5MP front camera, a 10,000 mAh non-removable battery, WiFi 6 connectivity, and support for 2G, 3G, and 4G cellular networks.

On the software side, the tablet ships with /e/OS, an Android 14-based system that replaces Google services with open-source alternatives. It provides tracker-free native apps such as Mail, Calendar, Maps, and Camera. Murena Workspace offers cloud storage and office tools with 1GB of free space. The App Lounge enables installation of apps from F-Droid, the Play Store, and Murena's collection of progressive web apps (PWAs), assigning each a privacy score from 0 to 10 based on permissions and trackers.

Gaël Duval, CEO of Murena, commented during the launch. The tablet is available for €698 excluding shipping, with a 2-year warranty covering manufacturing defects. Availability is restricted to Europe, Hong Kong, Canada, Puerto Rico, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, and the US.
