Nickelodeon cancels 'Dora' and 'Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles'

Nickelodeon's animated series 'Dora' and 'Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' have been canceled, with their upcoming seasons serving as the final ones. The decisions follow a programming strategy shift after the Paramount-Skydance merger. Paramount is exploring licensing opportunities for both shows.

Cancellation Details

The upcoming seasons of Nickelodeon’s kids animated series 'Dora' and 'Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' will mark their conclusion. Season 2 of 'Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' is set to premiere on Paramount+ in December, with episodes airing on Nicktoons the following year. For 'Dora', the debut of its fourth season on Paramount+ remains to be determined, followed by a window on Nick Jr. A fifth and final season of 'Dora' has been produced, though its release status is unclear.

Background and Strategy Shift

These cancellations stem from restructuring after the Paramount-Skydance merger. All Paramount linear networks, including Nickelodeon, and Nickelodeon Animation Studios—which produces the shows—have been consolidated into a TV Media division led by Chair George Cheeks. In a recent memo outlining the executive structure, Cheeks emphasized a more focused approach to cable programming.

“Our cable brands will focus on a more curated slate, optimizing programming and marketing resources to amplify what resonates most,” Cheeks stated. “That means leaning into franchises like SpongeBob, PAW Patrol, RuPaul’s Drag Race, South Park, Ms. Pat and The Daily Show, while continuing to develop new IP across our studios and seeking new ways to amplify and connect with audiences.”

Notably, flagship Nickelodeon series like 'SpongeBob SquarePants' and 'PAW Patrol' are prioritized, while 'Dora' and 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles'—despite their long histories at the network—are not on the list. However, both could potentially return in future iterations.

Licensing Outlook

Paramount is pursuing third-party licensing for the series, a practice it has followed for years, with some Nickelodeon titles already available on platforms like Netflix. The 'Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' cancellation was first reported by The InSneider.
