Nicklas Bäckström has withdrawn from the Tre Kronor squad for next week's international tournament, along with Anton Lindholm, Max Friberg, and Felix Nilsson. The Swedish Ice Hockey Association announced the changes, with replacements including Isac Heens and Fredrik Olofsson. Nilsson's withdrawal follows a suspected concussion in a recent Rögle game.
The Swedish national team, Tre Kronor, will head into its upcoming landslagsturnering without several key players. According to the Svenska ishockeyförbundet, Nicklas Bäckström, Anton Lindholm, Max Friberg, and Felix Nilsson have all pulled out of the squad. Replacements are Isac Heens from Frölunda, Sebastian Hartmann from Timrå, Fredrik Olofsson from Rögle, and Simon Ryfors from Davos.
The reason for Bäckström's withdrawal remains unclear. Förbundskapten Sam Hallam had previously highlighted Bäckström's enthusiasm for representing Sweden, stating, “När jag ringer och frågar hur läget är och att jag vill ta ut honom i Tre Kronor så blir Nicklas väldigt glad för att representera Tre Kronor igen och säger: ’Självklart, vill du ha mig så kommer jag’. Det säger väl lite om personen och karaktären också.” After Brynäs' recent loss to Djurgården, Bäckström expressed disappointment and avoided details on the national team, saying, “Inte så mycket tankar just nu. Vi får ta det senare. Just nu vill jag bara försöka glömma matchen.”
Felix Nilsson's absence is linked to an injury sustained in Rögle's 2–0 loss to Leksand. In the second period, Leksand's Anton Johansson's shoulder hit Nilsson's head during a scrum, forcing him out. Rögle coach Dan Tangnes noted, “Det är inte jättebra. Jag är tveksam till att han åker iväg med landslaget, men det får jag ta med Christopher [Alvengrip] i medicinska staben och höra vad de säger. Han behöver gå igenom vanlig procedur när det händer.” Nilsson reported a headache but did not require hospitalization.
Tre Kronor opens the tournament at home in Ängelholm against Czechia on Thursday, followed by matches in Finland over the weekend.
