Nigeria launches GIFSHIP to extend health coverage

The Group, Individual and Family Social Health Insurance Product was officially introduced in Lagos to reach Nigeria’s informal sector. The scheme sets an annual premium of ₦38,718 per person under National Health Insurance Authority rules.

Nigeria’s push for Universal Health Coverage gained momentum with the launch of GIFSHIP. The product targets the 85 percent of the population working outside the formal sector.

Otunba Lekan Ewenla, managing director of Ultimate Health HMO, spoke at the event. He said the formal launch marks a step toward broader coverage and noted that only 15 percent of Nigerians are in formal employment.

The scheme operates under NHIA oversight with a monthly capitation of ₦1,450 per enrollee. It will focus on market associations, transport unions and other informal groups.
