NTSA launches cyclist competition in Nakuru for road safety

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) launched a road safety initiative in Nakuru on November 30, 2025, amid rising fatalities on Kenyan roads. The event, titled Share the Road, Save Lives, featured cyclist races and safety messages for all road users. It aims to reduce crashes by promoting responsible sharing of roads.

On Sunday, November 30, 2025, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) kicked off a cyclist competition at the Nakuru Showground to address growing concerns over road safety. Organized in partnership with the Kenya Red Cross and other supporters, the event under the banner Share the Road, Save Lives gathered cyclists for races and educational activities. These focused on key messages for drivers, cyclists, pedestrians, and boda boda riders to foster mutual respect and adherence to rules, ultimately aiming to lower deaths and injuries.

NTSA emphasized that responsible road-sharing reduces accidents. Practical tips included drivers scanning for cyclists and pedestrians, maintaining safe distances, and refraining from phone use while driving. Cyclists were advised to don helmets and bright attire, obey traffic signals, and enhance visibility. Pedestrians should utilize designated crossings, make eye contact with drivers, and remain vigilant. For boda boda operators, wearing protective gear, complying with regulations, and monitoring surroundings were highlighted as essential.

This initiative targets vulnerable groups like cyclists and pedestrians, who face significant dangers on Kenya's roads. The launch coincides with troubling statistics: road fatalities reached 4,195 from January to November 13, 2025, a 2.9 percent increase from 4,077 in the prior year's equivalent period. Pedestrians accounted for 1,460 deaths, motorcyclists 1,085, and cyclists 62.

NTSA intends to expand the competition to additional towns soon, aligning with the national target to cut road deaths in half by 2030.
