Nuevo León Governor Samuel García announced a $1 billion investment for a green AI data center, initially attributing it to Nvidia. The company denied any direct financial commitment, stating its support is limited to technological cooperation and talent training. García later clarified the investment comes from AI-GDC and Cipre Holding, using Nvidia technology.

At the 'México IA+ | Inversión Acelerada' event, organized by the federal Secretariat of Economy, the Business Coordinating Council (CCE), and Cipre Holding on November 12, Nuevo León Governor Samuel García declared the state would become Latin America's AI hub through a historic $1 billion investment in the first Green Data Center. 'Nuevo León se va a convertir en el hub de inteligencia artificial y qué mejor que con este gran anuncio, de una inversión histórica de un billón de dólares (mil millones de dólares) en Nuevo León, del primer Green Data Center. Eso nos tiene muy emocionados', García told the media.

The project, led by AI-Green Data Center (AI-GDC) in alliance with Cipre Holding, plans an initial $1 billion investment over the next 10 years, starting in 2026 with phases until 2030. It will use scalable infrastructure and Nvidia's high-performance processing technology for applications in manufacturing, health, and energy, operating with clean energy and efficient cooling. García also announced the creation of the Subsecretariat of Investments, Innovation, and Artificial Intelligence under the NCP program.

Later, García clarified that Nvidia designs and sells chips to companies building data centers, without direct investment.

Calista Redmond, Nvidia's vice president of Global AI Initiatives, stressed collaboration: 'En Nvidia nos sentimos muy honrados de ser recibidos en México para acompañarlos en este próximo capítulo de nuestro camino juntos'. The event aims to boost sovereign AI in Mexico, with projections to add $9 billion to annual FDI, according to CCE's Francisco Cervantes Díaz, enhancing productivity and GDP.

Nuevo León, with its industrial ecosystem in El Bajío and hubs like Monterrey, positions itself as a regional leader, though it faces challenges in training and energy sustainability for data centers.

Mitä ihmiset sanovat

Reactions on X to Governor Samuel García's announcement of a $1 billion Nvidia investment in a Nuevo León AI data center are predominantly skeptical and critical, following Nvidia's denial of direct financial involvement and clarification that support is limited to technology and training. Media outlets neutrally report the discrepancy and subsequent explanation that funding comes from AI-GDC and Cipre Holding. Some users mock the governor for exaggeration, while a few defend him, arguing criticism harms the state's image. High-engagement posts from journalists and media highlight the embarrassment and question the accuracy of the initial claim.

Meta has agreed to fund seven new natural gas power plants and extensive energy infrastructure to support its largest data center under construction in Richland Parish, Louisiana. The deal with Entergy Louisiana includes 240 miles of transmission lines and battery storage, as reported by the Wall Street Journal. This follows a non-binding pledge by tech companies to cover power costs for AI data centers.

As opposition to data centers grows over energy and environmental concerns, industry groups are launching aggressive advertising campaigns promising jobs and clean energy. In Virginia, the epicenter of data center development, groups like Virginia Connects have spent heavily on ads to improve the sector's image. Critics argue these claims exaggerate job creation and ignore the facilities' resource demands.
