Oklahoma groom charged with murder in bachelor party shooting

A 22-year-old groom in Oklahoma faces second-degree murder charges after fatally shooting one of his friends during a bachelor party. Nolan Dain Engel allegedly mistook 21-year-old Braden Uhlmann for an intruder at an Airbnb rental. Authorities released Engel on bond after his arrest.

Nolan Dain Engel was arrested on Saturday and charged with second-degree murder in the death of Braden Uhlmann, according to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI). The incident occurred just before 1 a.m. on April 4 at a residence off Rockhill Circle in Broken Bow, about 240 miles southeast of Oklahoma City. Deputies from the McCurtain County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of a shooting and found Uhlmann with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was transported to a hospital but later died from his injuries. Authorities said Engel admitted to being at the scene and was determined to be the shooter based on evidence and interviews. Court documents obtained by KXII, an ABC affiliate in Sherman, Texas, detail that Engel made spontaneous statements to officers identifying himself as the shooter. He told investigators he was at the cabin with three friends for his bachelor party when he heard knocking noises and saw a shadow outside the front door, believing it to be an intruder. Engel reportedly fired a single shot from a 9 mm handgun. He and another friend then went outside and discovered Uhlmann on the front porch suffering from a wound to the upper chest. It remains unclear whether Uhlmann was armed. No other injuries were reported. OSBI described the investigation as ongoing, with assistance from the McCurtain County Sheriff's Office and the Hochatown Police Department. Engel was booked into McCurtain County Jail but has since been released after posting a $250,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on April 28.
