Paramount in talks to distribute Rush Hour 4

Paramount is in discussions to distribute Rush Hour 4, the long-awaited sequel to the buddy-cop franchise, with director Brett Ratner returning at the request of President Donald Trump. The film will reunite stars Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker. This marks Ratner's first narrative feature since sexual misconduct allegations in 2017.

Background on the Franchise

The Rush Hour series began with the 1998 original, directed by Brett Ratner, which grossed $244 million globally. It followed two mismatched police officers teaming up to rescue a diplomat's daughter. The sequels, Rush Hour 2 in 2001 and Rush Hour 3 in 2007, were even bigger hits, earning $347 million and $258 million respectively, despite mixed critical reception.

Development Details

Rush Hour 4 has been in the works following intervention from President Trump, who reportedly urged Paramount to revive the series, as first noted by Semafor. Ratner, whose career stalled after #MeToo allegations in 2017, is set to direct. His most recent feature was 2014's Hercules starring Dwayne Johnson. Ratner recently helmed the 'Melania' documentary, which Amazon acquired for $40 million, strengthening ties to the Trump family.

Paramount, recently acquired by Skydance, will receive a flat distribution fee for theatrical release but won't handle marketing or financing. Warner Bros., which produced the originals via New Line, secures first-dollar gross from box office revenues. Multiple studios passed due to Ratner's involvement.

Cast and Timeline

Jackie Chan, now 71, and Chris Tucker, who hasn't led a film since 2007, are returning. No release date is set, amid concerns over the comedy genre's declining box office appeal. Paramount aims to expand its slate to 15 films annually by 2026 under new CEO David Ellison, a Trump supporter.
