Release Details
PJ Morton's Cape Town To Cairo (Live) reimagines the nine tracks from his 2024 studio album, infusing them with the vibrant energy of his band, Afro Orleans. This live project, including an accompanying concert film, builds on Morton's tradition of immersive performances, following his GRAMMY-winning Gumbo Unplugged and Watch The Sun Live. Background and Journey
The original Cape Town To Cairo studio album was born from a unique challenge in October 2023: Morton traveled across Africa for 30 days, starting with no preconceived ideas, to create a full album. His route spanned South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, and Egypt, where he immersed himself in local cultures, stories, and communities. This journey, now two years later, inspired the live version, serving as a musical bridge between Morton's Louisiana roots and the continent's diverse influences.
The studio album featured collaborations with African talents including Fireboy DML, Mádé Kuti, Asa, Ndabo Zulu, Soweto Spiritual Singers, P.Priime, and The Cavemen. In contrast, the live recording spotlights Afro Orleans' exhilarating arrangements, emphasizing raw emotion and musicianship.
Tour and Future Plans
Morton is currently headlining a tour, with highlights including his annual Black Friday Show at New Orleans' Orpheum Theatre. This release continues his streak of innovative projects that blend personal storytelling with global sounds.
