A new Politico poll conducted by Public First in early May finds Americans remain broadly pessimistic about the economy, with a majority describing the cost of living as the worst they can remember and nearly half continuing to blame President Donald Trump for current conditions.

The Politico survey, conducted May 9–11 by the polling firm Public First, questioned 2,065 U.S. adults.

It found that 53% said the cost of living is the worst they can remember, up from 46% in a similar Politico/Public First poll conducted in mid-November.

The May poll also found that nearly half of respondents continue to hold Trump responsible for the state of the economy, little changed from the November reading. In addition, a plurality said their personal finances have worsened since Trump took office — including 18% of people who voted for him in 2024.

Other recent polling has similarly shown that economic sentiment remains weak and that the conflict with Iran has become a major public concern, particularly because of its perceived effect on prices such as gasoline.

A small group of North Carolina voters who backed Joe Biden in 2020 and then Donald Trump in 2024 told moderators they feel more anxious about the economy and split on Trump’s job performance, but none said they planned to vote for Democrats as the 2026 midterms approach.

A new Gallup poll indicates that only 35% of Americans rate the environment as good or excellent, the lowest figure since tracking began in 2001. Majorities express deep concerns over water pollution and climate change. Meanwhile, 57% believe the government is doing too little to protect the environment.

A new POLITICO survey highlights deep divisions between Democrats and Republicans over what threatens U.S. election integrity ahead of the 2026 midterms. More than a third of Americans believe the contests could be stolen, though the two parties disagree sharply on the main risks. The poll, conducted in mid-April, underscores ongoing distrust in the voting system.

A POLITICO Poll reveals broad U.S. unease with artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency—even spanning 2024 Trump and Harris voter bases—as pro-industry super PACs pour tens of millions into 2026 midterm races. Pluralities see crypto as too risky and AI advancing too quickly, with voters favoring candidates backed by groups pushing stricter regulations.
