Communications Minister Solly Malatsi, along with representatives from BMIT Knowledge Group Pty Ltd, presented details to the committee. Malatsi explained that the funding model consists of two main parts: one focused on the methodology and the other containing commercially sensitive information. He emphasized that finalizing the model requires input from Members of Parliament and requested a closed session to discuss the sensitive aspects due to their confidential nature.
Diko stressed the linkage between the funding model and broader legislative efforts. "The work that is being done towards the funding model is a huge step," she said. "We also look forward to the finalisation of the SABC Bill because as we all know this funding model is not going to exist in the legislative lacuna. We are looking forward to the minister also giving the sense of timelines on when they will be ready to start engagements on how the funding model is going to be incorporated into legislation."
The Department of Communications and Digital Technologies has consulted the National Treasury during this process. Diko specifically asked for clear time frames to ensure the model's timely completion and integration into law, underscoring the committee's commitment to supporting the SABC's financial stability.
