Ribeira do Pombal bans distilled drinks in response to methanol poisoning

Following the methanol poisoning of seven residents confirmed on December 31, Ribeira do Pombal city hall in Bahia has imposed a temporary ban on the sale and consumption of distilled alcoholic beverages until January 5 to protect public health. Three victims remain hospitalized in serious condition.

This ban comes after forensic analysis confirmed methanol in blood samples and drinks consumed at an engagement party, as previously reported. Symptoms included vomiting, nausea, dizziness, blurred vision, and shortness of breath.

The decree prohibits sales and consumption in commercial establishments, bars, restaurants, events, and street vending. Enforcement is by the Municipal Health Surveillance agency with Civil Guard support. Penalties include shutdowns, seizures, destruction of products, and legal action. The Bahia Civil Police continues investigating.

Methanol, toxic and similar to ethanol in taste and appearance, can cause blindness, coma, or death. Authorities urge avoiding drinks from unknown sources and seeking prompt medical care.
