Ruto announces new airport construction to start in July

President William Ruto said on Friday that construction of a new airport will begin next month with funding already secured.

Speaking to leaders from Marsabit County at State House in Nairobi, Ruto noted past public opposition to a similar project and described the condition of the current facility. “We tried building a new airport, and people revolted. The current airport has a canvas on the tarmac, and we are getting a lot of shame,” he said.

He assured the audience that work would start in July. “I want to assure you that the construction of a new airport will begin in July. And we have the money for the construction,” Ruto added.

The statement followed the award of a separate contract the previous day for upgrades at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to a Chinese firm.
