Schalper will vote against constitutional accusation against Grau

Renovación Nacional deputy Diego Schalper announced he will vote against the accusation against former minister Nicolás Grau, drawing criticism from Republican Party lawmakers and Pamela Jiles.

Schalper, head of the RN bench, confirmed his position in an interview on Mesa Central of Canal 13 on June 21, 2026. He indicated that a group of deputies will vote against the accusation that will be reviewed this week in the Chamber of Deputies.

The lawmaker defended a constitutional reform bill he presented with other legislators to make accusations harder. The initiative seeks to raise the required signatures from 10 to 20 and demand 78 votes for approval.

Republican Party lawmakers questioned the decision. José Carlos Meza, Luis Sánchez and Agustín Romero said rejecting the accusation normalizes mediocrity and avoids political responsibility for government errors.

Pamela Jiles also criticized Schalper, while Senator Luciano Cruz-Coke backed his stance and called for ending the use of accusations as a political tool.
